Ang Mga Dyornal Ko
Ang Mga Dyornal Ko
Dyornal 3 / Journal 3
Nang
magsimula ng pag-aaral ngayong taon, alam ko na ang pagbabalik sa
Filipino ay isang paghamon para sa akin. Sinubukan ko sa aking utak na
ihanda ang aking sarili at alam ko na ito ay nangangailangan ng
karagdagang trabaho at komitment.
When the school year began, I knew that going back into Filipino would
be a challenge for me. I tried to mentally prepare myself knowing that
it would require more work and commitment than what I was used to.
Unfortunately, I was unable to uphold that promise to myself and was
unable to allow myself to learn as much of the language as I had hoped
to. These past weeks I have struggled with all three areas of
language: reading, writing, and speaking. Although I have continually
studied and practiced, it is clear that it was not enough.
Of all the areas to practice, I enjoy reading the most. It helps me to
learn new words and see how to use words in their correct contexts.
However, I still can’t get over my own self-consciousness and find
myself reading at a slow pace. When I’m at home, I tend to just read
through the sentences. I may not always understand what I say, but I
manage to correctly read my words at a faster pace. It sounds
better than how I read in class because I still get shy and would
rather say each syllable and word, even if it is slower than everybody
else. I do like to read our lessons and even review it later reading
aloud to my parents over the phone. They tend to give me lessons on my
accent and the ennunciation of the words. I am hoping I can become more
comfortable and confident with my reading to read in a more fluent
manner.
Reading lessons allows me to see the construction of sentences as we
learn in class. Though most readings do contain complex sentences, it
at least shows me basic concepts like actor focus or object focus. All
quarter long I have been practicing my verbs in the different verb
tenses. I still have some difficulties with –an and –in verbs,
especially with the verbs that use special cases to add an “h.” I
continue to practice my writing by creating sentences with the
different verbs and pronouns. On paper I can see the pattern, and
understand the concept. Unfortunately, this doesn’t reflect on most of
my tests. I believe that when I practice at home, I give myself the
time to really think about the words the words that I need to use and
the correct way to use them. But under short amounts of time, I
overlook small things and make stupid mistakes that could be easily
avoided. I have actually enjoyed writing the labs and like the
challenge it gave me. I hope writing could become more natural to me to
the point where I can realize small mistakes and correct them instantly.
Much of my practice for writing has helped me with my practice for
speaking. Everything I write, I say aloud to test if it at least sounds
like it makes sense. But for speaking, I have noticed I give myself
less time to think about what I’m trying to say and end up using the
wrong words and pronouncing them incorrectly. Much has to do with my
inability to memorize the large vocabulary of Filipino words. I still
have my apartment labeled, and yet I still find it hard to think of the
right words when I need them. This makes it hard for me to speak
Filipino aloud in a public setting. I continue to attempt to converse
with my family and often get in trouble when I don’t speak the
language. They usually hear me use the wrong words or pronounce them
with the incorrect accent. Yet I still continue to speak to my family
as they encourage me to simply say whatever I want to as they
appreciate me trying.
The main reason I have these problems is because I do not put enough
time and effort into practicing and studying. Even though I do these
techniques to help me, I clearly do not do it enough as it does not
reflect on my grade. I have yet to take the class as seriously as my
others, and it is something I now know I cannot continue to do. Unless
I put in the equal amount of time and energy into this class, there is
no way I can do any better than I can wish. Since I am so familiar with
the language from hearing it at home and with my family, I
underestimate the requirements in actually learning the language. By
next quarter, I am hoping to prove to myself that I can learn this
language and will hope to hold full conversations with my family,
without the constant corrections.
