Sino si Victoria Manalo Draves?
Namatay si Victoria Manalo Draves noong ika-11 ng Abril, 2010. Lumahok siya sa London Olympics, noong 1948. Siya ay isang babaeng Pilipino-Amerikano na naging unang nagtagumpay ng gintong medalya sa platform diving. Namatay siya sa gulang na 85 sa Palm Springs sa sakit na kanser.
Ang kanyang ama ay Pilipino at ang kanyang ina ay Ingles. Noong 17 taon siya, gusto niyang sumali sa “Fairmont Hotel Swimming and Diving Club” sa San Francisco, pero sinabi ng coach nya na hindi siya puwedeng sumali dahil may pangalan siyang Pilipino. Sinabi rin ng coach niya na dapat palitan ng Taylor ang apelyido niya, sa halip ng Manalo.
Kumuha siya ng bagong coach, si Lyle Draves, na sa dakong huli ay napangasawa niya. Bukod sa Olympics, nanalo si Victoria Manalo Draves ng limang mga kampeonato sa Estados Unidos. Napasok siya sa International Swimming Hall of Fame at may parke na ipinangalan sa kanya, ang “Victoria Manalo Draves Park” sa San Francisco.

Victoria Manalo Drave died on April 11, 2010. She participated in the London Olympics in 1948. She is a Filipino-American woman who became the first winner of the gold medal for platform diving. She was 85 years old when she died in Palm Springs.
She was born to a Filipino man and an English woman. When she was 17, she wanted to join the Fairmont Hotel Swimming and Diving Club in San Francisco, but her coach said that she could not join because she had a Filipino name. Her coach also said that she should change her last name to Taylor, instead of Manalo.
She got a new coach, Lyle Draves, and eventually, they married. Besides the Olympics, Victoria Manalo Draves won five competitions in the United States. She entered the International Swimming Hall of Fame and there is a park that is named after Victoria Manalo Draves in San Francisco.

Ang Pilipino Graduation (Pagtatapos ng mga Pilipino) ay matagal nang tradisyon na
ipinagdiriwang ng buong komunidad na Pilipino sa UCLA. Ang taong ito ay ang ikalabing-
walong taunang pagdiriwang, kung saan kinikilala at ipinagbubunyi ang mga nakamit at
nakamtang tagumpay sa akademya ng mga estudyanteng magtatapos habang
ipinagdiriwang ang kultura ng mga Pilipino. Hindi lamang ipinagdiriwang ang pagkumpleto ng mataas na edukasyon ang layunin ng Pilipino Graduation, nais din nitong ipagdiwang ang kolektibong nagawa at natamo ng buong komunidad na Pilipino. Ang tema ng seremonya ngayong taon ay: "Pangarap Noon, Pamana Ngayon" (Once a Dream Now a Legacy).
Hindi lamang limitado sa mga Pilipino ang maaaring lumahok. Lahat ng ibang etnisidad ay puwedeng sumali at magdiwang ng tradisyong ito. Ang kaganapang ito ay ginanap noong Linggo, ika-13 ng Hunyo 2010, mula alas-2:00 hanggang alas-4:00 ng hapon sa Royce Hall. May maliit na salu-salo pagkatapos ng seremonya sa patyo ng Rolfe mula alas-4:00 ng hapon hanggang alas-6:00 ng gabi.

The Pilipino Graduation Commencement has been a strong tradition celebrated throughout the UCLA Filipino community. This year marks its 18th annual celebration in which family and friends recognize the academic achievement of the graduates along with the traditions of the Filipino culture. This event celebrates individual achievement, as well as the achievements of the entire community. The Pilipino Graduation’s goal is not only to celebrate the completion of higher education, but also to commemorate the collective achievements and hard work of the larger Filipino community. The theme of this year’s commencement is: “Once a Dream, Now a Legacy (Pangarap Noon, Pamana Ngayon)”.
Pilipino Graduation is NOT restricted to Filipinos only. EVERYONE is welcome to join and celebrate this tradition. Pilipino Graduation Commencement was held on Sunday, June 13, 2010, 2-4 p.m. at Royce Hall. Reception followed immediately at Rolfe Courtyard (4-6 p.m.).
