Sinikap ng klase na maisama ang marami sa mga akdang sinulat ng mga estudyante upang maipakita ang lawak at lalim ng kakayahan ng mga mag-aaral. We are honored to share with you the fruit of the efforts of students and teachers of Filipino language and literature from various schools: UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, San Diego State University, California State, University, East Bay, Ohlone College, Research Institute for World Languages, Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, University of Hawai’i at Manoa, and UCLA. There were many challenges encountered in putting this issue together from technical issues, like deciding on what software to use, synchronizing student schedules at UCLA to work on the project, and choosing which contributions to include in the website. The class included as much contribution as possible to show the breadth and depth of what students can do with the language. The brief ten weeks was a challenge including the extra-curricular and academic work of students to wisely manage, edit all the contributions and design the site. The views expressed in the writings are solely of the authors’. Whatever shortcomings and errors the site may have are the sole responsibility of the makers of this site. The Intermediate Filipino 6 class at UCLA, second year and last quarter of study of Filipino language created the different pages. There were 14 students, and each one of them was in-charge of his or her pages, edited, translated, proofread, and copy edited their classmates’ work to render the pages free of errors, to the best of their effort and knowledge. Last year’s “Medical Filipino Project” with Dr. Andres de Luna of UCLA Medical Center now has accompanying voice through the hard work and kindness of Mrs. Ofelia Corpus Biado and Ezra Biado. The dialogs include medical scenarios commonly encountered in clinics and hospitals. We hope that these medical scenarios can be of great use to medical providers to enable them to better serve the Filipino community who are linguistically challenged towards better community health. Aside from our regular contributors, we are very fortunate to have in this issue, the works of students from University of Hawaii at Manoa, UC Riverside, and the Japanese students of Osaka University. The works reflect the current consciousness and issues at the heart of the youth’s preoccupation. May this site help the youth to find their own voice, express what they believe in, and their ardent hopes for a better society. May this also serve as a beacon for future contributors and the next writers, editors and designers of Liwanag at Dilim to spread the truth, utilize their special talent, originality, and creativity.
